Zwischenzug

Zwischenzug is german for intermediate move. It's one of those super useful techniques to have in one's chess arsenal. In a sequence of moves, instead of playing the expected move, a player will first play another (unexpected) move or moves and only then play the expected move. This will benefit the player who does the zwischenzug. The most common type of zwischenzug, or intermediate move, comes in the form of an intermediate check (zwischenschach), but not necessarily so. This might all seem very complicated, so let's look at some concrete and very instructive examples here below.

Tips for using the board below: If you tap the f3-square, that'll take you to the next game. C3 will take you back to the previous one. If you tap e7, that will flip the board. Note that once you've flipped the board, the functions don't flip, so e7 becomes d2, f3 becomes c6 and c3 becomes f6. Many more squares have functions, I'll let you discover them for yourself if you want to.
